unemployment reform
innovative policy solutions

Unemployment trends up or down depending on the state of the economy, but everyone can agree that the current system uses taxpayer dollars to put a band-aid on a problem that needs surgery. I pledge to put forward legislation that will require companies that mismanage their operations and layoff large numbers of employees to pay a “mismanagement tax” for each individual that is laid off. This tax will then be used to fund a 21st century workforce training program for people that lose their jobs. Through this program they will be able to learn how to code or become an apprentice for a valuable skilled trade, for example. This way, poor corporate management actually helps to fund a program that will train the right workers to fill the 150,000 jobs in Michigan that remained unfilled in 2017.
